A beautiful and sustainable September wedding

Nestled at the foot of the Mendip Hills, Coombe Lodge in Blagdon is a dream wedding venue, especially in September. The early autumn hues provide a stunning backdrop, and the mild weather is perfect for an outdoor ceremony. One way to make your wedding even more special is by using local flowers, which not only support local growers but also add a unique, seasonal touch to your celebration, and that was what my couple decided to do.

Coombe Lodge is renowned for its elegant architecture and breath-taking views across the Chew Valley. The venue offers both indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing you to tailor your wedding to your preferences. The gardens are particularly beautiful in September, with the changing leaves adding a splash of colour to the lush greenery.

Using local flowers for your wedding has numerous benefits. They are fresher, more sustainable, and often more affordable than imported blooms. Plus, they reflect the local landscape and season, adding a personal touch to your decor. Here are some of the local flowers we used that were perfect for a September wedding.

Dahlias: These vibrant flowers come in a variety of colours and are in full bloom in September. They can be used in bouquets, centrepieces, and any other types of decoration. They can even hold quite well out of water.

Asters: These daisy-like flowers are perfect for adding a touch of whimsy to your arrangements. They come in various colours, including purple, pink, and white.

Cosmos: Characterized by their slender stems and attractive, daisy-like flowers that can come in a variety of colours, including white, pink, red, and yellow.

Chrysathemum: These grow in varying petal arrangements, with some types having a daisy-like structure, others having a rounder, pompom-like appearance, and even some blooms with quill-like petals. The blossoms also have varying hues, from white and light yellow to deep burgundies and purple.

Zinnias: These flowers come in vivid colours from red, orange and deep pink to green, with a lovely long flowering season from summer to the first frosts.

In addition to the bridal bouquets and buttonholes, we also created several table centrepieces, using one bigger vase accompanied with a few, much smaller budvases. To add a more autumnal feel, we also scattered mini pumpkins and apples from a Somerset orchard.

One of the showstoppers of the day were gorgeous flower meadows, placed at the bottom of the staircase full of beautiful blooms and grasses, with some added extra candles for a more magical touch.

This September wedding at Coombe Lodge, adorned with local flowers, was a celebration of both love and the beauty of the local landscape. By choosing seasonal blooms, the couple not only enhanced the aesthetic of the wedding but also supported local growers and promoted sustainability. It was memorable and beautiful event…
